He is widely regarded for his leadership in the development and implementation of advanced fetal medicine and fetal surgery programs, integrating cutting-edge prenatal imaging, genetics, multidisciplinary counseling, and innovative fetal interventions to improve perinatal and long-term outcomes.
Dr. Herrera’s clinical and academic focus centers on the early and precise prenatal diagnosis of congenital anomalies, followed by individualized, evidence-based care pathways that span fetal therapy, perinatal management, neonatal transition, and long-term follow-up. His work emphasizes a holistic and ethically grounded approach, ensuring continuity of care from diagnosis through postnatal life.
He has played a pivotal role in advancing open and minimally invasive fetal surgical techniques, including landmark experience in in utero repair of spina bifida (myelomeningocele).
